Oak Hills Boys Bowl Way to State Tournament

GREEN TWP. - Throughout the regular season, Oak Hills High School's boys bowling team made a habit out of finishing runner-up in tournaments. At some point, though, that changed, and the Highlanders started winning.

Five times in the regular season, Oak Hills placed second, until they won the Greater Miami Conference tournament - its fifth outright league title (seventh overall) in the last decade - then a sectional championship, and a district championship on March 1 at Beaver-Vu Lanes. It's the first district title for Oak Hills since 2013, which was also fifth-year coach Kurt Francisco's rookie season.

Now, the Highlanders are one of 16 teams headed to the state tournament March 11 in Columbus, snapping a two-year absence at state.

"You've got different steps," said Francisco, "that's the way this team has been so far this year. Through the whole entire season, we did nine tournaments ... and we had five second-place finishes. We know that it's one step at a time. They don't look too far ahead."

Oak Hills won the district title on the shoulders of a young team that doesn't have a single senior.

"I'll have them all back next year," Francisco grinned.
