Board Resolution

RESOLVED, that Oak Hills Local School District recognizes the value of interscholastic athletics in the educational process and the values that students develop when they have the opportunity to participate in an athletic activity outside of the traditional classroom; and

That participants, coaches, staff, spectators and other responsible adults involved in board- approved, extracurricular athletic activities are expected to demonstrate the same level of responsibility and behavior at practice and competitions as is expected in the classroom; and

That integrity, fairness and respect are inherent principles of good sportsmanship and integral in the goals of our athletic programs that with them, the spirit of competition thrives, fueled by honest rivalry, courteous relations and graceful acceptance of the results; and

That all student-athletes should be challenged to excel academically and in displaying principles of sportsmanship; and

That student-athletes who are “good sports” are positive role models within the school and the community at-large; and

That a “good sport” knows that athletic competition builds character and shapes lifetime attitudes.

RESOLVED FURTHER, that the Principal and Athletic Director are hereby directed to adopt such rules, regulations and policies as they deem necessary and appropriate to implement the foregoing principles and philosophy.

Approved by Board of Education August 4, 2008

Resolution is included in the Athletic Coaches Handbook

Funding of Oak Hills Local School District Athletics

Oak Hills Local School District Athletics are primarily funded through ticket sales, student participation fees, partnerships, donations and fundraisers. Each high school athlete must pay $160 per sport and each middle school athlete must pay $135 per sport in order to participate in athletics.  Matscots, Chess and Academic Team shall pay $60. Cheerleaders pay $50 per season. These funds are paid directly to the school and are used to pay about half of the supplemental contracts (coaches’ salaries.)

In addition, the Oak Hills Athletic Boosters raise about $95,000 each year through membership and fundraisers (Stag, Concessions, Spirit Shop, etc) to support programs and the Athletic Department.

Each season the high school and middle school athletes will participate in a fundraiser as determined by the athletic department or athletic boosters. If run by the Athletic Boosters, the proceeds of those sales will go into the Athletic Booster accounts.  If run by the Athletic Department, the proceeds will go directly to the athletic department.

No individual sport is permitted to organize or carry out any separate fundraiser through the Athletic Department.  Any individual team fundraiser must be run through the Athletic Booster Club, specifically through the team custodial account.

Transportation of Student Athletes

  1. Transportation of all Oak Hills student athletes to away scrimmages and away games must be done using Oak Hills Local School District approved transportation.  This includes buses or vans. Student athletes must ride the district transportation both to and from games.  The exception to this would be if parents or guardians complete the Alternate Transportation form and present it to the Athletic Department, then Head Coach for approval.

  1. Arrangements for team transportation should be done through the Athletic Office using the “Transportation Request Form”.  These forms should be completed at least two weeks prior to the start of the season.

  1. If the game is cancelled or the time is changed, please e-mail the Athletic Administrative Assistant and/or Transportation.

  1. On a team trip, the coach has the same supervisory responsibilities that he/she has in the classroom.

  1. A board approved coach must ride the bus on each trip and is responsible for athlete discipline on that bus.  Exceptions may be made with extenuating circumstances.

  1. It is the coach’s responsibility to know the location of the opponent’s game site.

  1. It is the coach’s responsibility to provide his/her squad with directions to the opponent’s game site.  These directions can be obtained from the respective athletic office and prove very helpful to parents.

  1. Coaches have the responsibility to make certain that their athletes pick up all trash before exiting the bus at the end of the trip.

  1. No student is permitted to drive to or from any away contest. Exceptions may be granted in extenuating circumstances ONLY through written request by parent and subsequent approval of the Athletic Director, utilizing the Alternate Transportation Form.

  1. Students are expected to be cooperative and respectful towards Transportation.

  1. Athletes must pass the equivalent of five academic subjects in a nine-week grading period to be eligible athletically for the next nine-week/quarter grading period.

  1. An academic subject is one which, over the course of the school year, adds up to ½ credit toward graduation per semester.  At Oak Hills High School, the only courses which do not currently meet full ½ credit requirements are physical education classes and study hall.

  1. Athletes cannot re-establish athletic eligibility by taking course work in summer school.

  1. All Fall athletes will qualify academically by their grade performance in the last nine-week grading period (4th quarter) of the preceding school year.

  1. A student enrolled in the first grading period after advancement from the eighth grade must have received passing grades in 5 of the classes for which they received grades in the preceding grading period in which the student was enrolled.

  1. Athletes who have been ineligible for their entire season do not qualify for athletic awards.  This rule applies even though the athlete may have continued to practice with the team throughout the eligibility period.

  1. To be athletically eligible for the current grading period, middle school student athletes must have received passing grades in 5 classes taken during the preceding nine-week/quarter grading period.

Oak Hills Athletics

Social Media Policy – Code of Conduct

Playing and competing for Oak Hills High School and Middle Schools is a privilege not a right. Student-athletes in the OHLSD are held in high regard and are seen as role models in the community. As leaders we have the responsibility to portray our team, our school and ourselves in a positive manner at all times.

In recent years, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social networking sites have increased in popularity and are used by the majority of student-athletes at Oak Hills High School and Middle Schools.

Student-athletes may not be aware that third parties including the media, faculty/administrators, future employers, college coaches and staff members, and OHSAA officials can easily access their profiles and view all personal information. This includes all pictures, videos, comments and posts. Inappropriate material found by third parties affects the perception of the student, the Athletic Department and Oak Hills. This can be detrimental to a student-athlete’s future and reputation.

Examples of inappropriate and offensive behaviors concerning participation in online communities may include depictions or presentations of the following:

  1. Posting photos, videos, comments or posters showing the personal use of alcohol, tobacco, eg., holding cups, cans, shot glasses, etc.

  1. Posting photos, videos, and comments that are of a sexual nature.  This includes links to websites of a pornographic nature and other inappropriate material.

  1. Posting pictures, videos, comments or posters that condone drug related activity.  This includes but is not limited to images that portray the personal use of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

  1. Using inappropriate or offensive language in all comments, videos and other postings,  This includes threats of violence and derogatory comments against race and/or gender.

If a student-athlete’s profile and its contents are found to be inappropriate in accordance with the above behaviors he/she will be subject to one or more of the following penalties:

  1. Written Warning.

  1. A meeting with the Athletic Director and Head Coach.

  1. Penalties as determined by the Athletics Department, for example, suspension or removal from Athletic Team.

For your own safety, please keep the following recommendations in mind as you participate in social networking websites:

  1. Set your security settings so that only your friends can view your profile

.

  1. You should not post your email, home address, local address, phone number(s), or personal information as it could lead to unwanted attention, stalking, identity theft, etc.

  1. Be aware of who you add as a friend to your site - many people are looking to take advantage of student-athletes or to seek connection with student-athletes.

  1. Consider how the above behaviors can be reflected in all social media applications.

If you are ever in doubt of the appropriateness of your online public material, consider whether it upholds and positively reflects your own values and ethics as well as the Athletic Department and Oak Hills. Remember always present a positive image and don’t do anything to embarrass yourself, the team, your family, or Oak Hills.

Oak Hills Athletic Awards

At the conclusion of each season, the teams will have a shared Awards Night. The teams will join together for a short introduction, academic and GMC recognition and Highlander Award presentations.  The teams will then break out and continue with individual team awards.

The Oak Hills Athletic Boosters will provide the following awards for each team:

Varsity O” – this chenille letter award is given to each student athlete for the first year of competing at the varsity level. One is given for each sport.

Varsity Pin” – this award is given to each student athlete for each year of competing at the varsity level. One is given for each sport.

Four Year Varsity O” – this chenille letter award is given to each student at the completion of the fourth year of LETTERING for VARSITY in their respective sport (s).

JV O” – this chenille letter award is given to each student at the completion of the first year of junior varsity competition. One is given for each sport.

Class Numbers” – this award is given to each freshman athlete at the completion of his/her freshman season. Only one set of numbers is given to each student. For example, if a student plays freshman volleyball she would earn her numbers. Then she plays freshman basketball she would earn a chevron.

Chevron” – this award is given to each athlete who has already earned his/her class numbers or is a second or third year junior varsity player in the same sport.

1st Team All Conference: This award will be given to the coach at the GMC meeting prior to Awards Night and presented to the athlete at the individual team awards.

2nd Team All Conference: The award is created in the OH Athletic Department prior to the banquet. The coach must inform the Athletic Department of the name and sport of the athlete prior to Awards Night and will be presented to the athlete at the individual team awards.

The Oak Hills Athletic Boosters will also pay for one Highlander Award, Most Valuable Player Award and Most Improved Award for each VARSITY TEAM.  A coach may replace the MVP or MIP with prior approval from the Athletic Director.

The Athletic Department will create a standard design for the Highlander Award, MVP, and Most Improved Awards, but the Head Coach may design other awards that they choose to give out to their program.

Any additional Varsity awards will be paid for through the sport’s OHAB custodial account.  If the Head Coach would like to have awards for the JV and/or Freshman (JVB) teams the coach will use custodial funds for those as well.

The Athletic Office will place the order for the standard and specific team awards through a designated vendor.  The Head Coach may order the specific team awards through his/her preferred vendor with approval from the Athletic Director.

The Head Coach should provide the Athletic Office with their awards requirement lists 2 weeks  prior to Awards Night.

The Athletic Department will NOT purchase senior gifts or coaches’ gifts.

Senior Night

Generally, the last home game of the season will be designated as Senior Night.  Each Senior will be asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding their escorts and future plans. The information will be used at Senior Night to introduce the student and escorts.

  • For each athlete, the athletic department will provide a corsage for the mother and step-mother if appropriate (please let the Athletic Department know if a student requires more than one corsage!)

  • All other decorations and gifts will be provided by other players, team parents, or coach.

  • If a sport does not have a home event that is conducive to a Senior Night, another sport halftime will be used.  For example, Cross Country, Tennis, and Golf Senior Night will be at halftime of a mid-season Varsity football game.

Public Relations and Statistics

Local media will be notified. There will be a small reception for parents, administrators and coaches during this time. Notify the Athletic Department when an athlete commits to play in college. The signing period will not necessarily coincide with the season. This is an effort to recognize the accomplishments of our student-athletes.

Athletic Injuries Information

  1. Absolutely no athlete is allowed to practice or compete without a current and properly completed physical form on file.

  1. Make sure your squad has a medical kit issued from the athletic training office.  You are responsible to see that it is properly provisioned.

  1. If you need to take ice to a practice site or a contest, it is your responsibility to contact the athletic trainer in advance to make those arrangements.

  1. It is your responsibility to keep tabs on the heat and humidity as they relate to the physical well being of your athletes.  Familiarize yourself with the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially the first aid measures.

  1. You must have a set of completed Emergency Medical Authorization Forms for your squad with you at all practices and games.  They are to be used to contact parent(s) and determine doctor/hospital preference. At minimum, make sure you can access their information on Final Forms.

  1. In the absence of a trainer, preliminarily determine the severity of the injured athlete.  If there is any question, call the life squad and have the athlete transported to the hospital. Do not attempt to move a severely injured athlete.  This movement could cause further injury. Do not diagnose injuries, this is not your field of expertise. Many injuries are not what they seem on the surface.

  1. Do not leave a severely injured athlete unattended or under the supervision of another student.  If necessary send another student for assistant.

  1. In the case of an athletic injury that requires medical attention, it is very important that the parent(s) be notified as soon as possible.  Don’t assume that someone else will do it.

  1. Athletes whose injuries require medical attention must be cleared by their doctors in writing before they may return to practice or competition.  It is your responsibility to personally verify this release.  Asking the athlete is not sufficient.

  1. Work very closely with the athletic training staff on the rehabilitation of injuries and athlete availability.  If the sports medicine staff evaluation of an athlete determines that he/she is not ready for competition, a coach cannot override this decision.
