Ben Hageman is entering his 29th year with the Oak Hills Local School District and his ninth year as Director of Athletics. Throughout his tenure, Hageman has worked to build an athletic program centered on educational-based athletics, focused on providing meaningful opportunities and exceptional experiences for Oak Hills student-athletes.

Under his leadership, Oak Hills Athletics has continued to emphasize the important role high school athletics plays as an extension of the educational experience. His philosophy focuses on developing the whole student-athlete through competition while promoting leadership, accountability, teamwork, commitment, and pride. During his time as Athletic Director, the department has also completed numerous facility improvements and program enhancements designed to give Oak Hills students high-quality environments in which to train, compete, and represent their school and community.

Prior to moving into athletic administration, Hageman spent many years as a classroom educator and multi-sport coach, with experience coaching football, basketball, and track and field. Most recently, he served as Co-Head Coach of both the Oak Hills girls’ and boys’ track and field programs. His coaching career included being named GMC Coach of the Year in 2004 and helping Oak Hills athletes establish 25 school track and field records.

Hageman and his wife, Shellie, also co-founded the OHYA Track and Field program, creating additional opportunities for students in grades K–6 to become involved in the sport and connect with the Oak Hills athletic community.

In the classroom, Hageman served as Co-Department Chair of the Oak Hills High School English Department. He taught AP Seminar and Journalism and served as adviser to the school newspaper, The Tartan. He is recognized as a Master Teacher in the State of Ohio and earned a Lead Teacher Endorsement from the University of Cincinnati. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and a Master’s degree in Educational Foundations.

Before beginning his career in education, Hageman served in the United States Navy, working in the Public Affairs Office aboard the USS Saratoga.

Hageman and his wife, Shellie, reside in the Oak Hills School District and are the proud parents of three daughters: Julia (21), Annabelle (19), and Josie Bea (14).

Shane Sowders is a lifelong resident of Harrison, Ohio, and a dedicated educator, coach, and athletic leader. For more than three decades he has invested in student-athletes and families across Oak Hills Local School District—and well beyond it—with the same steady commitment that defined him as a player.

Athlete and Education
At Harrison High School, Coach Sowders competed in football, basketball, and baseball. He went on to play four years of football at Hanover College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He later completed a Master of Arts in Foundations of Education at Mount St. Joseph University and a Principal’s licensure at Xavier University.

Teaching and Leadership
Coach Sowders is in his 31st year of teaching. He began his career at Bridgetown Junior High and moved to Rapid Run Middle School in 1999, where he has also served as Athletic Director since 2008. Across classrooms and offices, his work has been marked by consistency, care for students, and a belief in the value of school communities.

Coaching
He has coached in OHLSD for 31 years: 25 years of middle school football, 28 years of middle school basketball, 30 years of middle school track, and 6 years of middle school golf. Outside the district, he has been part of the Cincinnati Future Stars baseball organization for 36 years—an enduring commitment to developing young athletes in the greater Cincinnati community.

Family
He has been married to Dawn Sowders for 31 years. They have a daughter, Madison (27), and a son, Logan (23).

Through teaching and coaching, Coach Sowders says it has been a pleasure to work with so many outstanding families and student-athletes. That gratitude, and the relationships behind it, remain at the center of his work.
